KonMari Method in the Bullet Journal

In the past couple of years, Marie Kondo has transformed how we look at decluttering and tidying our homes. Her innovative approach empowers people to create happier, tidier, more joyful homes.

It’s important to note that the Kon-Marie Method is more of a destination than a one-time purge.

After all, most of us are hoarding a HEAP of stuff! In other words, it can take a while to go through your house - especially if you’ve lived there a long time or it’s been a while since you embarked on a spring clean.

When tidying starts to feel stressful or overwhelming, the motivation to keep going soon disappears! This is where your bullet journal (or BuJo for short) comes in.

So if you’re itching to use the KonMari Method to turn your home from a sea of chaos into an ocean of calm, keep reading.

As well as some tips for bullet journaling your way to a tidy, clutter-free home, you’ll find a free downloadable checklist to help you get organized.

What is the KonMari Method - a quick overview

The overall premise of Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is to tidy your home, so you surround yourself with only things that bring you joy. The idea is that this will help you live a more joyful life.

This methodology could boost your productivity too! Have you ever noticed a correlation between a cluttered mind and a cluttered home?

The KonMari Method goes beyond spring cleaning or a decluttering session because it’s underpinned by a specific strategy.

1. You tidy your home by category - not by room. The five categories are:

a. Clothes
b. Books
c. Papers
d. Sentimental
e. Miscellaneous

(You’ll find the subcategories outlined in this handy downloadable checklist. It’s FREE!)

2. You tidy intentionally by making conscious choices about your reasons for keeping (or discarding) items. You do this by asking whether an item brings you joy.

a. If an item no longer brings you joy, then you discard it.
b. If an item brings you joy, you decide where to store it.

You might feel skeptical about going by category instead of room by room. The latter can feel more logical and time-efficient - especially if you have similar items in different parts of your house! However, thousands of KonMari fans believe the extra effort is worth it in the long run.

The secret is to get organized, which is where your bullet journal can help.

How to use your bullet journal to Konmari Method your home

Your BuJo is the perfect place to plot your strategy and keep track of your progress. For example, you may decide to do a sub-category every week - this is a decision you can make in your journal.

You can also stick a KonMari checklist into your bullet journal and check off categories once they are complete. Here’s a tidying checklist you can print out and use.

KonMari checklist

Each category is split into a series of subcategories (listed on the template) -- so you can tackle small chunks of items at a time.

KonMari and BuJo -- a perfect match?

With your checklist, you can create all kinds of spreads to get organized. For example:

• A master checklist - where you check off each category when it’s done
• A scheduler - to plan days and timeslots where you’ll get busy tidying a category
• A list of things you want to keep (and things that fill you with joy)
• A reminder of all the new homes where you decide to keep items (in case you forget!)

The choice is entirely yours :-)
